Keoneula Elementary School, Kids Initiating Change (KIC)

Students at Keoneula Elementary School, a new school in the heart of Ewa, has been working hard to make recycling a reality. This year, a 6th grade student group, Kids Initiating Change (KIC) have held two HI-5 recycling drives, using Clearstreams containers provided by the City, and have implemented a school-wide recycling program, using 64-gallon recycling carts, also provided by the City. They used the proceeds from the recycling drives to give to others. A portion of the proceeds went toward the purchase and donation of new books to the Shriner's Hospital for Children and The Ronald McDonald House. They also used the proceeds to create and distribute care packages for parents deployed overseas. In addtion, this year, they won a Kokua Hawaii Foundation award for their recycled artwork. And, for all their hours of hard work, The KIC crew was honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award, receiving a letter of recognition from President Obama.

These generous and enterprising students got together on their own, mentored by teacher Victoria Coffin, to create big changes on campus and in their community. Great work and congratulations KIC!
